These active predators eat a wide variety of food from both open water and the sea floor.
They consume many types of small fishes, as well as invertebrates such as krill, squid, cuttlefish, crab, shrimp, and squid.
Dolphins do not chew their food. Usually they swallow fish whole.
Commerson's dolphins have high energy needs, and adults eat about 10% of their body weight in food daily.
For comparison, an adult bottlenose dolphin eats approximately 4% to 5% of its body weight in food daily.
